Leaving the church for the first time in 20 years, I see it before I hear it. Flash of red wings on electric green leaves. Chirp. That’s her, five years dead. Hi, mom.

Cool piece of writing and a great twist.
Thanks! That means a lot!
Awww, I miss my Mom, too. Very nice
Thanks!
“Five years dead” is a punch in the gut. This is a lovely post. Thank you for sharing.
That last line was a great eyebrow raiser!
Nice post.
Oh,wonder how she knew? And why was she/he leaving the church for the first time in 20 years?Fascinating piece & I can sense a longer story here-hope to read the rest of it:-)
I like to think that souls departed can give us ‘signs’. A Cardinal is a beautiful sign indeed 🙂
I, too, like the idea of a cardinal appearing as a sign of your Mom. Spiritually cardinals signify a loved one in the afterlife. You’ve got one of my votes.
Thanks, Barbara!
Nice piece. Mine tend to be butterflies!
I believe our loved ones find us when we need it most. My brother is gone almost 5 months, my dad almost 18 yrs and yet when I need them they show up.
I’m glad she comes back once in a while to remind you, to say hi.
Oh, Kir, I’m so sorry to hear about your brother (and your dad, but that first year is the hardest). It’s true, the funny ways people pop up in our lives even when they can’t be there in reality.
